A situation where most banks in the banking system have insufficient liquidity. It can lead to the failure of some banks. The cause of the crisis is usually excessive lending that is not paid on time by over-indebted companies. But it can also be caused by a fall in share or property prices and a run on the banks. The central bank can solve the liquidity shortage by supplying more money to the market, e.g. in the form of discount lending. In countries with an underdeveloped banking system, the collapse of the clearing (payment) system can also be an exceptional cause of a crisis.
