A condition in which the failure of some banks leads to a run (attack) on other banks. Depositors of the other (not yet failed) banks are worried about losing their money. Runes can cause otherwise healthy banks to fail. The solution to this situation may be, for example, central bank loans to commercial banks (in this situation the central bank is in the position of a lender of last resort) or a deposit insurance scheme. Banking panics are now rare in developed countries.
